Kiwitalkz, an insider who has interviewed over 150 video game developers, reports that the earliest Elder Scrolls 6 could release is in 2028. He also suggests that there’s a “high probability” it launches in 2029 instead, which would be over a decade since The Elder Scrolls 6 was announced at E3 2018.
Although Kiwitalkz estimates 2028 and 2029, he clarifies that The Elder Scrolls 6 developer, Bethesda, “aren’t giving a rough date cause, quite frankly, it will do more harm than good, especially after announcing this game too early”. Todd Howard, director and executive producer at Bethesda, admitted in 2023 that The Elder Scrolls 6 was revealed prematurely, wishing it had been “announced more casually” instead of through a trailer.
Kiwitalkz has interviewed developers from Bethesda, and he was right about the latest GTA 6 delay, after reporting on “conflicting reports” within Grand Theft Auto developer Rockstar. There’s no official word from Bethesda on when The Elder Scrolls 6 could release, but launching in either 2028 or 2029 would be excruciating for fans.
The last mainline Elder Scrolls installment was Skyrim, released all the way back in November 2011, but re-released through several different versions, such as the Anniversary Edition in 2021. Bethesda also treated us to an excellent remaster of Elder Scrolls Oblivion this year, which stunned the original developers who are “not sure ‘remaster’ does it justice”.
The Elder Scrolls 6 is “progressing really well,” says Todd Howard
Key figures at Bethesda recently spoke to Game Informer as part of a Fallout retrospective. The Elder Scrolls 6 was briefly discussed, too, and Todd Howard assures fans that development is “progressing really well”.
Todd Howard says that the “majority” of Bethesda is working on Elder Scrolls 6, and that he wishes development “went a little bit faster – or a lot faster – but it’s a process that we want to get right”. Angela Browder, Bethesda Studio Director, also discusses how “The Elder Scrolls 6 is this endless set of possibilities” because of huge leaps within the video games industry since Skyrim launched in 2011.
Although Bethesda isn’t willing to provide fans with a release window, however tentative, there were reports earlier this year from Windows Central editor Jez Corden that the new Elder Scrolls hit a “quite playable” state, while also reporting it had only entered full production in late 2023, five years after the 2018 announcement. Jez Corden also reported earlier this year that Bethesda showed Microsoft an early Elder Scrolls 6 trailer that isn’t planned to be publicly released, at least not yet.
While there are no official details about the game other than its development, former Bethesda talent have discussed how they think it will turn out. Ex Elder Scrolls and Fallout gameplay designer Bruce Nesmith believes that it won’t revert to “fiddly character sheets” off the back of Baldur’s Gate 3’s success, and that it will instead focus on giving players “real choices” that are meaningful and have legitimate consequences for the game’s world, main characters, and NPCs.
